Different field positions require specific gloves. If you primarily play a particular position, select a glove designed for that role. Here’s a guide to the different positions and their corresponding gloves.
First basemen traditionally use a unique, larger mitt designed to prevent injury to the catching hand and to more easily receive throws.
The catcher's position is one of the most demanding and injury-prone on the field. A well-protected and comfortable catcher's mitt is essential. These mitts provide extra protection with more padding, a deep oval-shaped "basket" pocket, and a closed web. They are designed to be strong and durable and come with either an open or closed back.
Catcher's Mitt Sizes:
- Youth: Up to 31 inches around
- Adult: 32 inches around or more
Infield positions, except for first base, work best with smaller to medium-sized, lightweight gloves with shallow pockets for quick ball release. A glove with a large, deep pocket and strong open I-web, H-web, or trapeze web is ideal for middle infielders.
Usually prefer an 11 to 11 1/2-inch glove.
Often use gloves up to 11 3/4 inches.
May prefer a larger glove, up to 12 1/2 inches, for handling fastballs and foul balls.
Outfielders need larger gloves with deep pockets and often prefer closed web designs for secure catching. The average size of an adult outfield glove is about 12 inches or more, but the choice of size and webbing design is up to the player.
